Privacy Policy

Short version: We don't track your browsing. We don't sell your data. The only information we store is your account credentials and the filter settings you choose. Your family's browsing history never leaves your device.

1. What we collect

When you create a BrowseWise account, we collect:

  • Email address — used to identify your account and send transactional emails (password reset, billing receipts).
  • Password — stored as a bcrypt hash. We never see or store your plaintext password.
  • Filter settings — which categories you have enabled (adult content, ads, gambling, fake news).
  • Whitelist and blacklist entries — domains you have explicitly allowed or blocked.
  • Parent PIN — stored as a bcrypt hash if you choose to set one.
  • Subscription status — your plan (Free, Pro, Family, or Lifetime) and its expiration date, provided by our payment processor Lemon Squeezy.

2. What we do not collect

  • We do not log, store, or transmit the websites your family visits.
  • We do not collect IP addresses beyond what your browser sends in every HTTPS request.
  • We do not use third-party analytics, advertising trackers, or behavioral profiling tools.
  • We do not sell, rent, or share your personal information with any third party for marketing purposes.

3. How filtering works

BrowseWise is a Chrome extension that uses Chrome's built-in declarativeNetRequest API to block domains. Blocking decisions are made locally on your device — your browsing traffic does not pass through our servers. When the extension starts up, it syncs your account settings (enabled categories, whitelist, blacklist) from our API over an encrypted HTTPS connection. That sync data contains only your settings, never the URLs you visit.

4. Payment processing

Paid subscriptions are handled by Lemon Squeezy, our Merchant of Record. When you purchase a plan, you enter your payment details on Lemon Squeezy's checkout page — we never see or store your credit card information. Lemon Squeezy's privacy policy governs data collected during checkout.

5. Data retention and deletion

Your account data is retained for as long as your account is active. If you wish to delete your account and all associated data, email us at hello@getbrowsewise.com and we will permanently delete your account within 30 days.

6. Security

All data is transmitted over HTTPS. Passwords and PINs are hashed with bcrypt before storage. Our API is hosted on Railway with PostgreSQL; access is restricted to authenticated requests only.

7. Children's privacy

BrowseWise is a parental control tool designed to be configured by adults. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. The extension is installed and managed by a parent or guardian.

8. Changes to this policy

If we make material changes to this policy, we will update the effective date at the top of this page. Continued use of BrowseWise after changes constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
